The conservative yearly total on expenditure for feral pig management by private landholders has been estimated at $47.7 million with the possibility of much higher estimates that exceed $64 million.
These estimates exclude costs from production losses due to feral pig impacts. Feral pigs also pose a severe biosecurity and disease risk to landholders. An incursion of foot and mouth disease would cost in excess of $50 billion to Australian producers.
Feral pigs are difficult, time-consuming and costly to manage because of their intelligence, adaptiveness, reproductive capacity and mobility in the landscape. Coordinated actions by private and public land managers through well-managed programs are needed to protect assets and maintain suppression of feral pig populations.
